The project “Weekends with Lars von Trier”, which began last week, kicks off a large distribution of the director’s films, which will run until the end of May. It starts right now with the film “Dancing in the Dark”, where the main role was performed by the singer Bjork. Meanwhile, “Weekends with Lars von Trier” continues. On February 12 and 13, real magic will take place on the screen of the cinema “Pioner”: experimental and aesthetic works of the Danish director “The Element of Crime” and “Europe” will be shown. After screenings you can discuss what you have seen with the film expert Igor Sukmanov.

On these weekends the project will present the film “Dancer in the Dark”, another landmark film by Trier that won the Palme d’Or in Cannes and made Bjork a true movie star. In the film, the singer plays the role of Selma, an immigrant from Czechoslovakia. She suffers from an ailment that affects her eyesight, but she works in a factory blindly without telling anyone in order to earn money and save her son from the same illness. With the help of music and dances, she saves herself from despair and sacrifices herself for the life of her son. “Dancer in the Dark” is one of the most innovative films in the history of genre cinema, the director’s experiment with the musical genre that touches the soul. The film with Russian dubbing will be shown at the Pioner cinema until February 24 and at the Silver Screen Galileo until February 17. Falcon Club Cinema Boutique will show a version in the original language with Russian subtitles – in this cinema the release will start from February 18 and will last until March 3.

We propose to devote the next visits to the cinema to the visionary experiments of Lars von Trier: on February 12, the viewers can watch his debut full-length work “The Element of Crime”. A hypnotizing and metaphysical film with multiple references to the works of Andrei Tarkovsky tells about the investigation of a series of brutal murders in Europe. Using the controversial method of his detective mentor, the hero inevitably identifies with the criminal and turns into him himself.

On February 13 the viewers can watch the film “Europe”, the final film of the first trilogy in the career of Lars von Trier. A spectacular black-and-white film will tell the story of a young German Leopold Kessler, who returned from America to Germany, which is occupied by the allies. Firmly convinced that the war is over, he tries to return to normal life, gets a job as a railroads conductor and falls in love with a young girl Kat. The transformed concepts of good and evil and the devalued human life as opposed to the humanism of the protagonist, who did not experience the horror of war, lead to disaster, but leave hope. “Europe” received three awards at the Cannes Film Festival. The picture is considered one of the most important in the filmography of Lars von Trier, because many viewers begin their acquaintance with the director with this film and irrevocably fall in love with the director’s style.

All project films are shown in their original language with Russian subtitles.

The project “Weekends with Lars von Trier” and the film distribution in Minsk is organized by Visual and Performing Arts Centre “ART Corporation”.
