The most fashionable Italian Director Luca Guadagnino turns haute couture into a short film. His new film The Staggering Girl will be exclusively screened at the Centralny cinema on February 15. The film from the author of Call Me by Your Name and Suspiria is a fashion journey in the stream-of-consciousness memory maze starring Julianne Moore and Mia Goth. The film was produced in collaboration with Pierpaolo Piccioli, Valentino fashion house creative director. After the screening, the audience is invited to the discussion “Who needs haute couture and why?”. Cultural critic and fashion experts will talk about designers’ sources of inspiration and the purpose of creating high-end fashion.
In the story, the New York writer Franscesca (Julianne Moore) at a pink tea encounters a painting by her mother, an artist, and this spark in the form of a long-forgotten piece of art triggers the whirlwind of memories. Then Francesca goes to her mother in Italy, where her childhood games with paints, fabrics and shadows, her first love and first fears come to life like ghosts of Francesca’s youth.
The Staggering Girl had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in The Directors’ Fortnight section in May 2019. Julianne Moore (The Hours, Still Alice), Kyle MacLachlan (Dune, Blue Velvet), and Mia Goth (Nymphomaniac, High Life) played the lead roles. The film also stars Marthe Keller, KiKi Layne and Alba Rohrwacher.
Luca Guadagnino is an Italian Director whose debut feature film The Protagonists won two awards at the Venice Film Festival in 1999, as well as his film A Bigger Splash in 2015. Sayombhu Mukdeeprom, The Staggering Girl cinematographer, has previously collaborated with Luca Guadagnino on the films Suspiria and Call Me by Your Name.
“I have always loved cinema and during my adolescence I dreamed of becoming a movie director. When I discovered fashion and its narrative power, I decided to become a designer. It was for me a natural evolution of a dream. The film The Staggering Girl was made by my friend, Director Luca Guadagnino. This work fulfilled my dream and allowed me to combine what I love most: fashion and cinema,” says Pierpaolo Piccioli, Valentino fashion house creative director and the film’s co-producer.
The score is written by Ryuichi Sakamoto, a Japanese composer who collaborated with David Bowie and David Sylvian. Sakamoto also composed soundtracks for the films Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence, The Revenant, and The Last Emperor. The composer received the Academy Award, and two Golden Globes.
The film will be presented by Igor Sukmanov, film critic and MIFF Listapad programme director. After the screening, the audience is invited for a discussion with experts. Cultural expert Tatiana Zaydal, fashion expert Maria Pogorelova and personal stylist Natalia Lapina will participate in the discussion “Who needs haute couture and why? “ The speakers suggest to talk about the way high-end fashion is transferred into the language of cinema, about The Valentino Fashion House, designers’ sources of inspiration and the eventual purpose of creating the haute couture clothing.
