Fight Club is a movie that became the culmination of American cinematography at the turn of the Millennium and felt the cultural pulse of a new era. It’s a dark and gripping satire on Generation X, disillusioned with the American dream, a film that captures the social tension of the 1990s and the madness that will erupt around the world in the coming decade. Fincher showed the crisis of masculinity, consumer society, and nihilistic revolt with scathing irony through a scary combination of genres and sophisticated plot construction.

The film is based on the book of the same name by Chuck Palahniuk, author of Lullaby, Survivor and Invisible Monsters. Palahniuk is one of the most famous contemporary American writers, winner of the Pacific Northwest Booksellers Association Award and the Oregon Book Award, and twice a nominee for the Bram Stoker Award.

The narrator is a “white collar ” and typical consumer in the grip of the capitalist system, who suffers from chronic insomnia and dies of boredom in his monotonous and empty life. But one day he meets the charismatic soap saler Tyler Durden, who becomes the ideal for the narrator. Tyler believes that self-improvement is for the weak, and self-destruction is the only thing worth living for. Together they found a Fight club where they gather with other men on Saturdays to beat each other heartily: the pain of blows and the taste of blood bring them back to life. But the narrator has no idea how this will turn out…

David Fincher’s Fight Club was nominated for an Academy Award for  Best Sound Editing. David Fincher is one of the most notable and interesting of modern Hollywood Directors. His thriller Zodiac (2007) was nominated for the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, and the drama The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008) received three nominations for Best Director – at the Academy Awards, the Golden Globe Awards and the Saturn Awards. The biopic The Social Network also won a prize in the category Best Director.

Fincher creates a brisk, absurd and at the same time disturbing and dark story with a confusing relationship between the main characters in a brilliant role-playing of Edward Norton, Brad Pitt and Helena Bonham Carter. Two decades later, Fight club is still relevant, looks fresh and causes controversy.

Screenings will be held as a part of the project “Listapad. Collection”.
