The turn of the century, the capital of the Empire is plunging into the abyss of debauchery, and the only way to curb the libertines is to strengthen the laws. Angelo, a man who was appointed to judge the violators, is a cruel hypocrite. He extorts the young and innocent Isabella for sex in exchange for her brother’s life. Who can protect the poor girl? Because she knows that Angelo’s words “nobody will believe you” are likely to be true. Written more than 400 years ago, the play directed by Gregory Doran, the Artistic Director of the Royal Shakespeare Company, becomes relevant in the XXI century.

Gregory Doran is the Shakespeare-inspired director of many plays of the Royal Shakespeare Company. Hamlet with David Tennant and Patrick Stewart, called “the best Hamlet of the generation” is among his works. RSC: Measure for Measure is the final play of the trilogy about gender, power and love.  The actors of the stagings RSC: As You Like It and RSC: The Taming of the Shrew which you could see in TheatreHD in summer, will again appear in Shakespearean characters and will argue on the topical issues.

The new production will show a picture familiar from modern scandals: even a decent man can be turned into an uncontrolled beast by the unlimited power.  Gregory Doran reinterprets Shakespeare’s happy ending and makes you wonder if it’s really that happy.

Lucy Phelps, the star of the TV shows Midsomer Murders and Call the Midwife, as Isabella will present her character in a new capacity – she is no longer that boring prude who puts her chastity above her family, but a woman who is willing to fight for her values. And Sandy Grierson as two-faced Angelo – an official incorruptible judge and a man dying of secret lust.

Silver Screen Theatre Club is a project where the best world productions are shown, discussions are held, people get acquainted or just come for intellectual leisure. For three months, the Theatre Club creates an atmosphere of theatre in the cinema, with three calls, original programmes and intervals.

Traditionally, you can discuss the production with theatre experts and Angelika Krashevskaya, club moderator, Director of the Centre for Visual and Performing Arts “ART Corporation” and the International Theatre Forum “TEART”.
